We’re pleased to announce Vic Kids Eat Well. This stakeholder toolkit is designed to support organisations to spread the word via social media and other communications, such as newsletters or organisational websites.
Background
Vic Kids Eat Well is an exciting new state-wide movement focused on boosting healthy food and drink options in the places children spend their time, including schools, outside school hours care, sports clubs, recreation facilities, council operated facilities and more.
Vic Kids Eat Well is supported by the Victorian Government and is delivered by Cancer Council Victoria’s Achievement Program, in partnership with National Nutrition Foundation’s Healthy Eating Advisory Service.
The movement is backed by a committed workforce of health promotion professionals from a range of community health organisations and councils.
To increase support in some of Victoria’s most disadvantaged communities, 13 local government areas will also have the benefit of a dedicated workforce of Healthy Kids Advisors, delivered by Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation and supported by the Victorian and Australian Governments.
Vic Kids Eat Well is a priority initiative of the Victorian Government’s Healthy kids, healthy futures five-year action plan and is aligned with the priorities of the Victorian public health and wellbeing plan 2019-2023. Vic Kids Eat Well is also part of the core modules of the VicHealth local government partnership initiative.
Who can participate in Vic Kids Eat Well?
The primary audience for Vic Kids Eat Well are decision makers and operators for the following organisations:
- Primary and secondary schools
- Outside School Hours Care (OSHC)
- Sports clubs
- Sport and recreation facilities
- Community and council owned facilities
Note: the secondary audience includes community advocates, parents and carers, while the tertiary audience includes children and young people.
What are the key messages?
- Vic Kids Eat Well provides clear, simple and achievable steps to make healthy food and drink options available for kids.
- All kids deserve a healthy start where they learn, live and play.
How can organisations make changes?
The initiative offers community organisations four achievable actions, or ‘bites’:
- Refresh the fridge – give sugary drinks the boot and let water take the spotlight
- Switch up the snacks – ditch the sweets and offer delicious healthy snacks that give kids the fuel they need
- Change up the menu – give fruit and veggies a chance to shine
- Put the ‘fun’ into fundraising and marketing – add health appeal to meal deals and fundraising
How does Vic Kids Eat Well support organisations?
Vic Kids Eat Well offers participant community organisations access to resources and a network of amazing health promotion professionals. Parents and community members across Victoria will be proud to see their kids’ school, sports club and community centre involved.
The following steps explain how Vic Kids Eat Well works:
Step 1: Community organisations join the movement and are connected to a dedicated health promotion professional who will support them every step of the way.
Step 2: Organisations choose a small step, like kicking confectionary, or decide to make a bigger change, like changing up the menu and letting healthy food take the spotlight.
Step 3: Progress is celebrated. Vic Kids Eat Well is all about acknowledging milestones along the way – whether it’s skipping the deep fryer, or a overhauling the drinks fridge and saying goodbye to sugary drinks for good! Organisations that complete Vic Kids Eat Well bites will have opportunities to be recognised and rewarded through our monthly draws and competitions.
Step 4: Organisations keep the momentum going and work through all the Vic Kids Eat Well actions. Next, they can continue their healthy eating journey through relevant healthy eating policies and guidelines with the support of National Nutrition Foundation’s Healthy Eating Advisory Service, and receive Victorian Government recognition through Cancer Council Victoria’s Achievement Program.
